Remnants: Season of Fire by Lisa T. Bergren

March 25, 2015 by Suzie Waltner Leave a Comment

remnants book 2 cover

With the popularity of dystopian young adult novels, it isn’t a surprise that the genre has entered the Christian fiction market. I’ve read and enjoyed the trilogies: Hunger Games, Divergent, and Legend. What do you think it is about these books that draw people in? A young person bringing hope to a people? Someone rising above, taking a stand for what they believe is right? The action? In truth, it’s most likely a combination of these things.

I’ve known about Lisa T. Bergren’s Remnants series for a while. I even downloaded the first book on my Kindle a few months ago but my TBR pile is forever growing and I just hadn’t gotten to it. When I was given the opportunity to review the second book, I took it. It took three pages before I realized I needed to read the first book or I would be lost. After reading Season of Wonder, I was into the story and picked Season of Fire (book two) up immediately. Now the waiting begins for the final book in The Remnants Trilogy (sigh).

Andriana is a Remnant, a girl with the gift of empathy who has a high calling from the Maker. She and her knight, Ronan, have joined with other remnants (each with their own unique gift—healing, discernment, a seer) and knights to fight for the Maker’s glory. Ronan and Andriana have admitted they love each other but now have the struggle of riding themselves of that love because their enemy will use it against them. When Andriana is taken captive by Keallach (another remnant who has ignored his calling), she is challenged more than ever before. Separated from her friends and Ronan and determined to show Keallach the way back to the light, Andriana struggles with succumbing to his influence instead of swaying him to her side. Will she succumb to Sethos’s evil power or rely on the Maker to lead her through the darkness.

Unlike Season of Wonder, the second book in the trilogy gives the reader two points of view (both Andriana’s and Ronan’s while they are separated). This makes the book more rounded as the reader gets to follow both Andriana’s progress as well as her follow remnants. The story moves fast with a good balance of action and internal struggle throughout, and Bergren keeps you guessing as to which side Keallach truly belongs to. If you are looking for a good read for a teenager (or if you like YA books), this is a good choice with an uplifting, Christian message.

Both of Me by Jonathan Friesen

both of me cover

As I sit here after finishing this book, my mind won’t quit reliving this story. It’s a book that will most definitely be getting a second read from me, a book I will be telling others about, a book that resonates.

Clara is running when she meets Elias Phinn on an airplane. A boy she’s never met before but who seems to know her darkest secrets. How can he know these things about her? When she realizes Elias has taken her bag instead of his, she searches him out. The boy who answers the door is not the same one she met on the plane. In fact, the one who meets her at the door doesn’t remember ever meeting her at all. Clara is immersed in Elias’s world–his two worlds. One Elias–the one who seems normal, the one she likes–will disappear and another takes his place–the Elias she has dubbed The Other One, the one who does not live in reality but in a place called Salem. Clara is determined to learn what The Other One knows about her past and agrees to help him on his journey to find what he’s seeking.

And yes I’m being vague in my description of this book because I don’t want to give anything away. This story is one of hope, of love, of mystery, of heartache, of forgiveness, and finally, of acceptance. Through Elias, Clara learns how to love, how to become selfless, how to feel again. And through Clara, readers will be taken on a journey they won’t soon forget.

You can pick up a copy now from your local bookstore or pick up your copy here or here.

Home of our Hearts by Robin Jones Gunn

home of our hearts quote

As I mentioned earlier this year when Forever with You (the first book in Robin Jones Gunn’s Christy & Todd: the Married Years series) was released, I grew up with Todd and Christy. I walked their relationship with them through the Christy Miller, Sierra Jensen, and Katie Weldon series. I started one of my nieces on the Christy Miller series a few years ago and another one received the first two books when I visited this summer (they’re both getting more for Christmas–good thing they don’t read my blog) :). So I am so happy to be spending even more time with Christy and Todd Spencer as they navigate the trials and tribulations of adulthood and marriage. There’s lots of joy in there as well.

I didn’t stay up all night reading this one like I did the last one–but I did finish it on this lazy Saturday. What a fun way to spend the day–visiting old friends. This book was centered on Todd, Christy, Katie, and Eli but Doug and Tracy also make a couple of appearances. Most books end with an engagement or a wedding so it’s fun to be able to walk beyond that with Todd and Christy–to see some of the things Christy really struggles with in her marriage and how her faith in God as well as her husband and her friends help her overcome those same struggles. Another thing Gunn highlights well (without going into too much detail) is the sanctity of waiting until marriage to come together–how waiting makes everything sweet and a special gift for a husband and wife on their married life.

Gunn has been a master of creating catch phrases throughout the Christy Miller books and she doesn’t stop. Home of our hearts is sure to be added to peculiar treasures, God thing, may it be so, and more.

Undetected by Dee Henderson

When asked what he does for a living . . .

Mark Bishop is a man who accepts that responsibility, and handles it well. And at a time when tensions are escalating around the Pacific Rim, the Navy is glad to have him.

Mark wants someone to come home to after sea patrols. The woman he has in mind is young, with a lovely smile, and very smart. She’s a civilian, yet she understands the U.S. Navy culture. And he has a strong sense that life with her would never be boring. But she may be too deep in her work to see the potential in a relationship with him.

Gina Gray would love to be married. She has always envisioned her life that way. A breakup she didn’t see coming, though, has her focusing all her attention on what she does best–ocean science research. She’s on the cusp of a major breakthrough, and she needs Mark Bishop’s perspective and help. Because what she told the Navy she’s figured out is only the beginning. 4. Jane and Austen cover

Jane and Austen by Stephanie Fowers

[Jane and Austen: a Sweet Romance]

Meet Jane and Austen. First there’s Jane—an impractical, starry-eyed wedding planner; if love can’t match what she’s read in a book, she doesn’t want it. And then there’s Austen—a pragmatic, logical-to-a-fault financial consultant; even if he were interested in someone, he wouldn’t know.

The two have one thing in common: they can’t leave each other alone. Jane believes that if Austen could just experience a fairy tale romance, he would secretly love it. And Austen’s pretty sure that if one of Jane’s beloved heroes escaped from the pages of her dog-eared novels, she’d run and hide.

Both are about to be proven right.

When the rivals are called on to help a friend plan the biggest wedding of the year, an entire resort full of colorful wedding guests descends upon them—many sharing uncanny similarities to characters in a Jane Austen novel. It doesn’t take long before Jane gets everything she thinks she wants. After all, too much of a good thing can’t be all that bad, right?

But when Jane’s life turns upside down, the only one she can turn to is Austen; though he’s got his own troubles of the heart…and she’s afraid that he’s enjoying them more than he should.
