Childrens Book

Scarlett’s Spectacles by Janet Surrette – Children’s Book Review

October 26, 2019 by Suzie Waltner Leave a Comment

I’ve let a few children book reviews stack up. Today is the day I’m posting their reviews. If you’re on the hunt for some wonderful reads for little ones, stop back by. I’ve got two for younger kids and one middle grade I’m sharing about today.

About the Book

Which pair will you wear?

In a world where every person faces a daily choice between two pairs of glasses, young Scarlett grumbles through her days, seeing only the dreary aspects of life through her “grumbly glasses.” Tired of how Scarlett’s spectacles keep her daughter from seeing all the good around her, Scarlett’s mother encourages her to try “glad glasses” instead. Even though the change is difficult at first, Scarlett soon realizes that “glad glasses” make for happy days and that choosing to see with gratitude is possible because God always brings some kind of good from the circumstances in our lives.

This colorful and spunky board book is a great resource for tackling grumbly attitudes and encouraging more grateful hearts among children. And like Scarlett, after seeing life through “glad glasses,” readers may just chuck those grumbly glasses away for good!

The Knight in Shining Armor by Brianna Tibbets – Children’s Book Review

April 13, 2019 by Suzie Waltner Leave a Comment

Knight Battered Armor

While I don’t have children myself, I have friends who have little ones and love to be able to pass book suggestions on to them. Well, at least the excuse I give myself for reading children’s books. Sometimes they’re just what I need between some longer, deeper reads. This story written by Brianna Tibbetts and illustrated by Liz Stockton was a fun read.

About the Book

The Knight in Battered ArmorLord Tempesto is a snake in every sense. As a human, he is slimy, deceitful, and manipulative, but when he’s denied what he wants, he transforms into a gigantic, powerful snake. He wants nothing more than to rule the kingdom for himself, and he’ll stop at nothing to get what he wants.

Princess Melina dreams of marrying a knight in shining armor so she can rule her father’s kingdom someday. But when monster Lord Tempesto captures her and threatens to destroy her beloved kingdom if she doesn’t marry him, she has no choice but to submit to the hideous monster’s demands.

James, the son of a knight, hears about Princess Melina’s plight and sets out on the long journey to rescue her. But his own skills aren’t enough to win the fight against such a ruthless monster with strong, sinewy arms, and it takes teamwork between the captive and her rescuer to save the kingdom from the monster for good.

The Knight in Battered Armor shows children of all ages the importance of doing what is right no matter what and not being afraid to protect what is most important.

New Growth Press’ Spirit of Giving Children’s Book Giveaway

November 21, 2018 by Suzie Waltner Leave a Comment

Who doesn’t love giving and getting books for Christmas? (If you don’t, we may need to have a talk!)

Books are a great gift, especially for children. Not only do we want to encourage the love of reading and give them stories they will enjoy, we want to provide teaching moments. Plus giving little ones new books is really a gift to the parents as well. They need a break from the same old bedtime stories.

You don’t have to be a parent to buy for kids, you know! Maybe you have grandkids, nieces, nephews, neighbors, or want to bless some children from church.

New Growth Press is jumping into the gift giving season by giving away THREE children’s book gift boxes (retail value of $125 each). All of their children’s books are beautifully illustrated, entertaining, teach a lesson, and most importantly, are biblically based!

From November 19-25, you can enter to win one of three children’s gift boxes.

New Growth Press Children's Giveaway

Enter here

Each gift box includes five of New Growth Press’ new children’s releases and two of their best sellers:

  • God Counts: Numbers in His Word and His World by Irene Sun

This playful children’s book serves as a beginner’s theology book for young readers who love numbers and patterns. By discovering numbers in God’s world and in his Word, parents help their children foster a deeper love and knowledge of who God is and how he counts them as his. With countable illustrations and an easy-to-learn structure, children who are always seeking, finding, tracing, and counting numbers will be captivated by God Counts.

  • Buster’s Ears Trip Him Up: When You Fail edited by Edward T. Welch
  • Jax’s Tail Twitches: When You are Angry edited by David Powlison
  • Zoe’s Hiding Place: When You are Anxious edited by David Powlison

These three books are a part of the Good News for Little Hearts series. This is a new series of hardback, illustrated children’s books for three-to eight-year-olds—each centered on an animal family. The animal characters, colorful illustrations, and the real-life issues each animal family face will captivate children. The first three books address anxiety, anger, and failure, bringing biblical counsel and hope to issues every child faces. Together children and parents will be guided by the stories into meaningful conversations about living by faith in everyday life.

  • God Made Me and You by Shai Linne

God Made Me and You invites kids to explore God’s design for ethnic diversity. Because Scripture teaches that ethnic diversity is not something that should be tolerated but rather enthusiastically embraced, Christian hip hop artist Shai Linne helps children, parents, and caregivers to celebrate this biblical truth through a lyrical, rhyming style and colorful illustrations.

  • God Made All of Me by Justin and Lindsey Holcomb

God Made All of Me is an invaluable resource and beautifully illustrated story to help families talk about sensitive issues with two- to eight-year-old children. This helpful guide starts from the fundamental truth that God created everything and applies that truth to kids and their bodies. With the help of God Made All of Me, parents and caregivers can begin conversations with boys and girls about their bodies, navigating a discussion that can so easily be warped into confusion, embarrassment, and secrecy.

  • The Radical Book for Kids: Exploring the Roots and Shoots of Faith by Champ Thornton

The Radical Book for Kids is a fun-filled explorer’s guide to the Bible, church history, and life for boys and girls ages eight and up. Vibrantly illustrated and chock-full of fun facts and ideas, this interactive book competes with screen time by stimulating children’s natural curiosity and sense of adventure! Along with the many fun and exciting stories of historical figures, young and old readers alike will learn about the roots of our faith and the importance of the gospel in our lives.

Review: When God Made You (Children’s Book)

April 5, 2017 by Suzie Waltner Leave a Comment

About the Book

When God Made YouYOU, you… God thinks about you.
God was thinking of you long before your debut.

From early on, children are looking to discover their place in the world and longing to understand how their personalities, traits, and talents fit in. Knowing that they are deeply loved and a unique creation in our big universe is certain to help them spread their wings and fly.

Written in playful, charming rhyme and brought to life with vivid, fantastical illustrations, young readers will be encouraged and excited to learn about their own special gifts and how they fit into God’s divine plan as they grow, explore, and begin create for themselves.

‘Cause when God made YOU, somehow God knew
That the world needed someone exactly like you!

My Review

I had heard so many wonderful comments about this book from others, when the opportunity to get my hands on it came up, I grabbed it. And I was not disappointed.

This book is filled with well-flowing rhymes that give the book a sing-song, nursery rhyme flow from Matthew Paul Turner and beautiful, whimsical artwork from David Catrow. It’s sure to become a bedtime favorite for the little ones in your home.

Readers get a sense of this little girl’s creativity, her impishness, and her heart.

But the most important thing about this book is the message of how God looks out for each and everyone of His children. How He design each person to be an individual.

My Rating:
