Let me start with a little disclaimer. While I have spent time with young children in roles such as Sunday school teacher, baby sitter and aunt, I do not have any children of my own so my opinion may be a little skewed.
Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s talk about Owlegories Vol 1, a DVD series created by Thomas and Julie Boto as a fun way to teach their kids about God and his love. The first volume has three episodes (about 20 minutes) long: The Sun, The Seed, and The Water. In each episode, the owlets are sent on a mission to find different items while at the same time finding ways attributes of God are like those things.
Each of the animated episodes ends with a 5-10 minute talk from a special guest. I think the creators intentionally did this for the benefit of anyone watching these DVDs with the little ones as they go into much more depth than the actual cartoons.
While at times it felt like the creators were trying to a little too hard with the humor, I know kids well enough to know they’ll think parts of Owlegories are hilarious. But even more important, we all know children will watch things they like over and over and over again. With these DVDs not only are they getting wholesome entertainment but they are memorizing Scripture and learning more about the Lord.
