Be sure and visit my blogger friends who host First Line Fridays at Hoarding Books and check out what first lines others are sharing this week.
We’re looking at another weekend. This one is a busy one for me (in the best way because it involves going to a Nashville Predators hockey game), so I don’t know that I’ll get much reading done. That’s okay, though, I’ll make up for it the following week with some extra time off work.
There were a lot of great books released this week, including the one I’m sharing the first line from! I’ve been looking forward to reading this one.
More About the Book
Olivia Brownlow is no damsel in distress. Born in a workhouse and raised as a boy among thieving London street gangs, she is as tough and cunning as they come. When she is taken in by her uncle after a caper gone wrong, her life goes from fighting and stealing on the streets to lavish dinners and soirees as a debutante in high society. But she can’t seem to escape her past … or forget the teeming slums where children just like her still scrabble to survive.
Jack MacCarron rose from his place in London’s East End to become the adopted “nephew” of a society matron. Little does society know that MacCarron is a false name for a boy once known among London gangs as the Artful Dodger, and that he and his “aunt” are robbing them blind every chance they get. When Jack encounters Olivia Brownlow in places he least expects, his curiosity is piqued. Why is a society girl helping a bunch of homeless orphan thieves? Even more intriguing, why does she remind him so much of someone he once knew? Jack finds himself wondering if going legit and risking it all might be worth it for love.
Olivia Twist is an innovative reimagining of Charles Dickens’ classic tale Oliver Twist, in which Olivia was forced to live as a boy for her own safety until she was rescued from the streets. Now eighteen, Olivia finds herself at a crossroads: revealed secrets threaten to destroy the “proper” life she has built for her herself, while newfound feelings for an arrogant young man she shouldn’t like could derail her carefully laid plans for the future.

How about you? What book(s) are you reading this weekend?
I hope you enjoy the hockey game! 🙂
I’m currently reading The Amish Nanny’s Sweetheart by Jan Drexler. The first line is “You’re sure you want to do this?”
Over on my blog today I’m sharing the first line from Michelle Griep’s newest book “The Innkeeper’s Daughter”. Drop on by if you get the chance and let me know if you are a fan of numbers. Have a wonderful weekend!
Have a good time at the hockey game!! I hope they aren’t playing the Penguins. Then I might have to cheer against you 😉
I’ll share the first line from Jessica Patch’s new release, Secret Service Setup.
“Do you ever feel like sometimes the sunshine is deceiving because the day is going to be ominous regardless of how bright it is?”
Loved Jessica’s new book! And no worries, we’re playing New Jersey tomorrow night. Aren’t you from NY state? Why are you cheering for the Penguins? My BIL (who lives near Seattle) loves them. We had a fun little rivalry going during the cup playoffs last year.
I am going to have to read this one. Oliver Twist was one of my favorites when I was younger and I do enjoy a good re-imagining. Happy Friday!
Father Brian Flynn, the curate at St. Augustine’s, Rossmore, hated the Feast Day of St. Ann with a passion that was unusual for a Catholic priest. – Whitethorn Woods by Maeve Binchy
Happy Friday! 🙂
This is the second FLF-er today with Olivia Twist — sounds like one I should check out! 🙂
Over on my blog, I’m sharing the first line of a wonderful new book about the Maccabees, Judah’s Wife, but here I’ll share the first line of the nonfiction book I’m reading now, Our Unmet Needs by Charles Stanley: “Do you have a nagging, gnawing feeling that something isn’t quite right in your life? Do you feel overwhelmed by a need you can’t meet, a problem you can’t solve, or a question you can’t answer? Are you able to identify the real need that underlies your feelings of uneasiness, fear, worry, or restlessness?”
Happy Friday! I always love seeing what everyone is reading when I get to stop by! My first line is from A Refuge Assured by Jocelyn Green:
“Propping open the door to her shop, Vivienne Rivard listened to a distant rumble that vibrated the windows and shivered in her chest.”
I went to several hockey games while I was at Liberty University–intense! This book looks so interesting! Mostly because I love Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. 🙂 Happy Friday!
I’m intrigued by this story line. I enjoyed Oliver Twist. On my blog, I’m featuring The Healer by Beverly Joy Roberts. It’s an amazing fiction that moved me deeply. I hope you will take the time to check it out. Here, I will share the first line from a book by C.H. Spurgeon that I’m currently reading. “‘Thou has visited me in the night.’ –Psalm 18:3. ‘Tis a theme for wonder that the glorious God should visit sinful man.” Wishing you a blessed weekend.
Happy Friday!
Over on my blog today, I am sharing the first line from Kristi Ann Hunter’s new novella, A Search for Refuge. I’m just on chapter two, so I will share the first line from that chapter here:
“Nash slid the tin of peppermints into his coat pocket and reached beneath the counter to pull out Mrs. Lancaster’s log book.”
Great minds! I am hoping I get to dive into this one soon!
Sinc I am featuring the same book on my blog so here I’ll share the first line from The Man He Never Was by James Rubart. Toren Daniels rolled over in bed and light pierced his closed eyelids, which meant five a.m. had come and gone.
My first line is from A Most Noble Heir by Susan Anne Mason:
Derbyshire, England
March, 1884
Nolan Price scanned the fields of newly budding greenery that stretched as far as he could see and slowly inhaled the scent of grass, soil, and freshly spread manure.
I cannot WAIT to read this book!
My current first line is from Robin E. Mason’s The Silent Song of Winter: “The sounds of the swamp in winter would scare another person but not me. I grew up here.”
Have fun at the hockey game! I’ve only been to one NHL game before and loved the experience, I am determined to go again at some point.
I am currently reading Flood Waters by Christy Barritt, so I am going to share the first line of Chapter 22. Today’s Goal: Do whatever necessary to find Skye and nothing else.
I loved that one! A couple great kisses in it!
This book sounds very interesting. You have posted a great review. I’ll be on the lookout for this one and add it to my TBR pile. Over on my blog I posted a first line from Sea Rose Lane by Irene Hannon.
Here it is:
He was going to hit that pickup truck.
I’m featuring The Heart Between Us by Lindsay Harrel on my blog today (brilliant novel!), and I’m currently reading Grace Restored by Toni Shiloh. Here’s the first line of Chapter One:
Victory was hers. The judge had sentenced Brett Donn to twenty years in prison for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
