A new-to-me author and a new genre but a classic and favorite Bible story. Check out Kandi J. Wyatt’s steampunk version of Esther.
In My Opinion…
One of my favorite stories in the Bible is that of Esther. One woman who listens to God in the midst of some serious pain and heartache, not to mention the threat of death.
And a steampunk retelling of Esther? Sure, sounds fun. I’ve been curious about the genre since I first learned of it a few years ago. What better way to check it out.
Since I’m not a connoisseur, I can’t tell you if my opinion is correct, but this read didn’t seem that different than regular historicals to me. Sure, there’s mention of experiments, leather corsets, and gas lamps, but I was under the impression that steampunk has at least a bit of a sci-fi element to it and that the ladies are somewhat scientific-minded. But, this was a good read to at least dip my toe into the genre water (because now I’ must find another steampunk read to compare and contrast).
All of the genre talk aside this retelling is excellent. Arianna learns some hard lessons but never stops putting her trust in the All-Seeing One. And, though several missteps, it’s through Arianna that the Duke discovers that who he listens to and trusts should require careful consideration.
