In My Opinion
Instilling the habit of a daily prayer and devotional time in your child is something they can carry through with them into adulthood. In Jesus Listens: 365 Prayers for Kids, Sarah Young not only offers 365 prayers for your child ranging from asking God to help them do the right thing, turning to Him when they are scared, and thanking Him for the good things in their lives.
In addition to the prayers, intended for children between the ages of eight and twelve, Young begins each day with a Bible verse and ends with more scripture for children to read on their own, encouraging them to look for more answers in God’s Word. This little book opens the door for deeper conversations parents can have with their kids about what’s going on in their lives and what God’s has promised in those areas of difficulty (and joy).
There are two things I wish this book had included, though. The first is something from the author in the introduction stating these are examples of how to pray and that there isn’t one right way. That God wants to hear from them whether the prayers are eloquent or a single sentence. That it doesn’t matter how we pray, but that we pray and however you pray is okay with Him. The other is an index of prayer topics that the reader could refer to if, for example, they are waiting for an answer to prayer on a day other than June 27 or if they feel like giving up in September instead of on April 21.
Jesus Listens is a great place to get your kids started with prayer if you come alongside them and expound on what they are reading and learning by sharing your own prayer life with them.
