EXCERPT

HUMILITY

Pride is the elevation of self, while humility is the recognition of our constant need of God and commitment to put other’s needs before our own. The ultimate example of humility can be found in Jesus’ life here on earth. In Paul’s letter to the church in Philippi, he offers us some insightful instructions on what it means to be humble.

“Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself. He had equal status with God but didn’t think so much of himself that he had to cling to the advantages of that status no matter what. Not at all. When the time came, he set aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave, became human! Having become human, he stayed human. It was an incredibly humbling process. He didn’t claim special privileges. Instead, he lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death—and the worst kind of death at that—a crucifixion.”

(Philippians 2:5-8 | THE MESSAGE)

Christ’s example in humility is hard to humanly comprehend. Here is the creator of the universe (equal status with God) willing to become human. And why? He did this so he could live out a selfless, obedient life, die, and become a ransom for many. And while we will never come close to matching this type of humility, we are called to follow his example as best we can.

Pride is the enemy of humility. If we want to demonstrate humility in our daily lives, we must ruthlessly eliminate our pride. We must tear it out at the root.

Are there any areas in your life where you believe pride may have found a foothold? Ask a trusted friend if they can help you identify any warning signs. Remember who you are with regards to your relationship to God. We are all sinners and in constant need of his mercy and grace. And it’s normal to struggle with this because we are all sinful!
