Today, I am excited to give you a photo tour of what my imagination conjured up for the town of Carrington, NC, the setting in Lynn H. Blackburn’s Beneath the Surface.

Don’t you love how fiction stretches your imagination? I used several of my local areas as inspiration for this tour. Do you see your town when reading? Below each picture/collage is the explanation of what each of these. Italicized are quotes from the book.

Beneath the Surface: Carrington, NC

Lake Porter is its own character in Beneath the Surface. The book opens on the lake, Leigh lives in her family’s home on the lake, where the gang spends much of their time. “It had been too long since Ryan had been under. Too long since he’d been able to drown out the world and all its distractions. Beneath the surface, his focus was undivided.” 

 

Leigh’s family home is located on the shores of Lake Porter. It’s also where the dive team docks after their discovery beneath the surface of the lake.

 

“Sitting on the dock in the dark had been one of her favorite pastimes growing up. She’d listen to the sounds of the night—the water lapping on the shores of Lake Porter, chatter from the homes around them, the faint whir of boats. She’d spent hours out here, dreaming about the future, praying about the decisions she needed to make. She’d felt closer to God on her dock than anywhere else.”

It’s a good day when Leigh finds a prime parking spot at the hospital where she works as an ER nurse: “At least she’d scored a great parking space last night. No riding the shuttle to the other side of the sprawling campus this morning.”

 

When Ryan is not out investigating his cases or keeping an eye on Leigh, you can probably find him at the Carrington Police Station.

With offerings like the Kitchen Sink and the Vegetable drawer, the Pancake Hut is a local favorite among the residents. “…you don’t go to the Pancake Hut for oatmeal. You can eat oatmeal at home. If you tell me you usually order oatmeal, I don’t know if I’ll be able to handle it.”

“Mr. Cook owned two hundred acres on the edge of the county. Some of it was lakefront property he’d never developed. Said he never would let anyone develop it. Most of it was wooded, and the driveway meandered into the heart of it, where he lived in the old farmhouse he’d been born in.”

      Thanks Annie! I was really trying to find a place to take a photo of while I got those shots of the lake (my Lake Porter is actually Percy Priest Lake near Nashville) but I had no luck finding just the right one. Stock photography to the rescue!
