Excerpt

As we get closer to the inventory room, my heart rate won’t slow down. There’s a wall with vanity after vanity that makes me pause a moment because they’re so beautiful. They all must be at least fifty years old. These must have been covered with sheets yesterday—I’d wondered what they were. Now they have occupants sitting and trying to perfect horror makeup in their mirrors. In the center is a circle of boxes, fold-up chairs, and a few old wooden chairs that must have survived with the building itself. I wonder if Bill worked all night preparing this. I hope someone helped him. Then I see the wall with hanging costumes. There are more rollaway racks than I remember. There have to be at least six now, when yesterday we only had three.

I walk over to them and start running my fingers over the costumes one by one. I walk halfway through one when his fingers touch mine. Joshua’s calloused fingers brush over my hand. The touch sends a jolt of electricity that arches my spine back. It’s like walking into a club where the base shakes your rib cage, uncontrollable. My fingers tingle where they touch his. Joshua looks like a nightmare I should run from, but I can’t resist his pull. I put my hand on his shoulder to balance myself and keep him at a distance.

About the Author

Stephanie Hansen is a PenCraft Award Winning Author. Her short story, Break Time, and poetry has been featured in Mind’s Eye literary magazine. The Kansas Writers Association published her short story, Existing Forces, appointing her as a noted author. She has held a deep passion for writing since early childhood, but a brush with death caused her to allow it to grow. She’s part of an SCBWI critique group in Lawrence, KS and two local book clubs. She attends many writers’ conferences including the Writing Day Workshops, New York Pitch, Penned Con, New Letters, All Write Now, Show Me Writers Master Class, BEA, and Nebraska Writers Guild conference as well as Book Fairs and Comic-Cons. She is a member of the deaf and hard of hearing community.
