Murder at the Mikado by Julianna Deering

murder at the mikado

Our three amateur detectives are back in the third installment of The Drew Farthering Mysteries. Madeline Parker and Drew Farthering are only a month away from their wedding when Drew’s past comes calling. A stage actor has been found dead in his dressing room and a former flame of Drew’s is the number one suspect. Fleur Landis was formerly an actress. Now she is married with a husband and child to protect. Drew is torn between helping her family and focusing on his fiancée.

As Drew, Madeline, and Drew’s best friend, Nick Dennison, delve deeper into the murder, Drew and Madeline’s relationship takes a turn Drew hadn’t expected. Will they be able to solve the mystery of the Murder at the Mikado? Will Drew and Madeline’s relationship survive the ghosts of his past?

I’ve enjoyed everyone of Julianna Deering’s books in this series. The main characters are likeable (even Chief Inspector Birdsong who gives Drew a hard time but encourages his assistance with investigations). Set in 1930s England, the places, characters, and scenes all fit. Book three was as engaging as the others. Maybe more so since I now know more about Drew, Madeline, and Nick.

Life Support by Candace Calvert

life support cover

Lauren Barclay is a fantastic nurse and an even better sister and daughter. She puts her life on hold to return to Houston and keep an eye on her sister while her parents are out of town. Her job puts her in the vicinity of someone who caused pain in her family. Someone she wants to forget.

Elijah Landry is a PA in the critical care unit. He hasn’t forgotten Lauren but he is a single father and is trying to fight his own father to protect his disabled brother’s life. Lauren seems content with just avoiding him, but he wants to make peace with her. He hopes for something meaningful with her.

Life Support is the third book in the Grace Medical series written by Candace Calvert. I had not read any of this author’s books before but was drawn into the lives of everyone in this story—even the supporting cast of characters. They were written well and became real as I read. This book works fine as a standalone read but fans may disagree and suggest you read the former books. I understand the author will take a secondary character from her previous book and the next book will be about them. So readers might learn more about Lauren if they read Rescue Team first.

I was impressed with all of the medical descriptions and terms the author used. I’m not in the medical field but everything was believable. I will definitely read more from this author in the future.

GIVE:JOY Third Prize

Like Jonah’s dog, Mutt, the animals in our lives are priceless sources of help, comfort, and unconditional love. No one understands this better than our story’s hero, veterinarian Garret Miller. Throughout the book, “Dr. G” works tirelessly to save and heal people’s furry friends, including Mutt, and an injured service dog named Valiant.

And Like Dr. G, many real-life veterinarians and animal shelter workers make all the difference in the lives of our animals, often giving services beyond what’s billed. Our Third Prize winner will have a chance to do something extra special for their favorite vet or animal shelter, with:

• A $100 veterinary/shelter donation to be used toward treatment of an animal whose owner cannot afford to pay for veterinary care, or
• A $100 Starbucks card sent to the veterinary/shelter staff as a special encouragement gift

Book Summary:

Dinah Taylor has an orderly life, and that is just how she likes it. A perfectly furnished luxury apartment, a satisfying career as a scientist and CEO of her own company, and an uncomplicated personal life. But all of that changes when she meets seven-year-old Jonah.

The boy shows up one day, a scruffy dog by his side, in front of her office building. Dinah knows nothing about kids and even less about animals, but after she buys him breakfast, he shows up the next day…and the next. She tries to learn more about him, to help him, but he’s remarkably skilled at evading her questions.

And then, late one night, he calls her in a panic–his dog has been badly injured. Dinah rushes them to a local animal clinic, where she meets Garret, a veterinarian with a thriving practice and a passion for drawing.

Though Jonah takes to Garret right away, for some reason neither understands, Dinah and Garret just don’t mesh. But for Jonah’s sake, their lives continue to collide, and slowly the relationship between these three strangers begins to change.
